The role of the Agile Coach may have originated in IT, but it’s now in strong demand across other industries as organisations see the benefits of working in an Agile way. Based on my experience doing a lot of agile training the past year, I do see why they are required.

There is no a singular answer to this as many Agile Coaches around the world has treaded different paths. Just like a Jedi Master, you need to have certain qualities if you want to use the Agile Force properly! If you’re in the field of program/project management and are looking to upskill for new and exciting roles, becoming an Agile Coach is a great opportunity to take the next step in your career.

Most often, what they’re talking about as an “Agile Coach” is what I would call a team-level Agile Coach. Good communication skills.

[Edited: Updated links 28 Feb 2011] Today I received an interesting question – “What training is there to develop agile coaches as output of the training?” The goal of an Agile coach is grow a productive Agile team that thinks for itself rather than relying on someone to prescribe the way to do things.

Agile Coach is better than Scrum Master. Additional certifications, such as a Scrum certification, are important for more specialized roles. I can understand the HR reaction. Agile Coaches are higher in the hierarchy than Scrum Masters. Someone in that role works at a tactical level with individual members of an Agile team to help them become more proficient in executing a Scrum process. We can take what we’ve learned and make a newer, better, and leaner system for working and teaching, passing those lessons to new Agile Coaches. So it depends on your background, basically. And I always thought: why do we need them?

Being a Certified Disciplined Agile Coach (CDAC) indicates that you are a trusted expert with significant proficiency with Disciplined Agile.

A true Agile Coach is a master of the art of Agile who can adapt and guide the team in whatever complex situation they are and can provide them with leadership to become high performing. You can coach other people in disciplined agile strategies and advise organizations in the adoption and tailoring of Disciplined Agile. People left their jobs to become agile coach. This is really an exciting time to become an Agile Coach.
