The first volcanic birth in the Aira Caldera was Kita-dake (North peak). It appears that Sakurajima Volcano is formed by andesite-dacite magma of an intermediate composition or a mixture of both, and broadly as the age becomes younger, it appears that the proportion of mafic magma originating from the mantle increases (Uto et al., 2005).

The lava flows of the 1914 eruption connected it with the Ōsumi Peninsula. In 1963 through 1964 it produced one of the largest and most deadly eruptions of the 20th Century. 500 years after that, Minami-dake (South peak) was created in an overlapping fashion next to Kita-dake.
