If you have looked at data from the SOHO LASCO C3 coronagraph over the last week or so you may have noticed the very bright object in the field-of-view. In these observations, its coma was substantially smaller than the Sun in volume, but the forward scattering of light made the comet appear significantly brighter.
It could be the most spectacular seen in SOHO images in many years, or possibly ever.
It was discovered in images taken by Austrailian astronomer Terry Lovejoy taken Novenmber 27th. The STEREO space weather beacon telemetry mode is a very low rate, highly compressed data stream broadcast by the spacecraft 24 hours per day.
