They were reportedly the largest silica sinter deposits on earth.
The Pink Terrace, or Te Otukapuarangi (“The fountain of the clouded sky” in Māori) and the White Terrace, also known as Te Tarata (“the tattooed rock”) were of New Zealand natural wonders. PINK AND WHITE TERRACES. It was also thought to have destroyed the Pink and White Terraces on Lake Rotomahana, then hailed as the eighth wonder of the natural world. Before Mt Tarawera erupted in the early hours of June 10th, 1886, the Pink and White Terraces on the shores of Lake Rotomahana were considered to be the eighth wonder of the world, and attracted tourists from far and wide. Eighty years ago, when the first Listener rolled off the printing press, this was one of the haunting reminders of an eruption that killed more than 120 people, ripped a 17km-long gash in the floor of Lake Rotomahana and through the surrounding land, and wiped the famed Pink and White Terraces, one of the world’s first ecotourism icons, off the map. The Hunt for the Pink and White Terraces - When Mount Tarawera erupted on 10 June 1886, it took over 100 lives.
