The SeaWinds instrument on the QuikSCAT satellite was a specialized microwave radar that measured near-surface wind speed and direction under all weather and cloud conditions over Earth's oceans. The NASA scatterometer QuikSCAT operated from June 1999 until Nov 2009 and provided accurate satellite measurements of ocean surface wind speed and direction.

For the case of QuikScat, we use 4 satellite microwave radiometers (F13 SSMI, F14 SSMI, F15 SSMI, and TMI) to determine if rain is present at the location of the QuikScat observation.
